Heroine was pitch perfect in hitting the emotional notes of being a woman in the military, simultaneously fighting sexism, homophobia and the need to prove oneself. Danna's harrowing journey to find a new normal in the aftermath of rape and loss, as portrayed by the exceptional Wells, is excruciating but ultimately redemptive, not only for her but also for the audience.

Kayla Williams, US Army Veteran and author of "I Love my Rifle More Than You"
I want to work with the UK Armed Forces and the US Military.
Picture
I think the camaraderie and the depth of the bond between soldiers is quite hard for a civilian to really understand.  From the very start of my friendship with the soldier I’ve been writing about for 8 years, I have been struck by the reasons why she went into service, and her resolution that “despite everything, I would sign up again tomorrow.”   I believe it intends to be a noble institution that has a rich seam of history in my own family: my grandad fought in the front lines in WW1 and my dad served in the Navy in WW2, on the Russian convoy referred to by Churchill as “the worst journey on earth.”

I want

to bridge the gap between civilian and military society with mutual respect, and open difficult conversations to mutual benefit.  Many initiatives pioneered in the military trickle down as exemplary ways of doing things in civilian society, and broaching the massive problem of institutionalized sexual assault is one such area I feel could be yet spearheaded by the Army.  Already the play has been chosen to get alongside the efforts that may already be happening in the Armed Forces to address this.    Perhaps you work in a branch of the military that would like to talk further?

My approach

is not about silencing, covering up, blame, shame or embarrassment.  The play is very frank, a stark look at the dynamics and aftermath of sexual assault when there is no access to justice.  There is implied criticism of the US Army, but this is where the most benefit can be made - from having the most potentially uncomfortable conversations in the right way, to define what the army is about right now, today.  There is, in our mutual aims to eradicate sexual assault, overlapping territory in which we both converge to bring it to a halt. Lets create zero tolerance and zero occurrence of MST, not in 5 years, not in 10 years, but with military precision -  starting today.
